Latin Lawyer – Brazil’s VBSO appoints agribusiness partner

25 Mar Latin Lawyer – Brazil’s VBSO appoints agribusiness partner

Brazilian law firm Vaz, Buranello, Shingaki & Oioli Advogados (VBSO) has promoted a corporate lawyer to partner, boosting its agribusiness practice.

The firm announced the promotion of José Afonso Leirião Filho at the start of the month. It now has 12 partners

Leirião, 33, focuses his corporate practice on agribusiness and agricultural matters. He joined the firm back in 2013 and has since amassed experience in restructuring and civil litigation cases.

Leirião is a professor of agribusiness law at Insper, a São Paulo private higher education institution, and at the Brazilian Agribusiness Law Institute (IBDA).

Erik Oioli, VBSO’s managing partner, says Leirião has an excellent track record of advising agribusiness companies and solving legal challenges in the sector. “ESG matters will be increasingly present in the agribusiness sector, especially in the development of sustainable agriculture with low greenhouse gas emissions and the generation of carbon credits,” says Oioli. The firm’s agribusiness, structured finance and M&A practice areas will remain busy, foresees the managing partner. “Give the relevance of agribusiness to the national economy, we believe that the upcoming presidential elections will have little impact on the sector,” adds Oioli.

Brazilians will go to the polls on 2 October to elect the country’s next president. While President Jair Bolsonaro campaigns for his re-election, former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva – commonly referred to as Lula – is also running as a candidate. Recent polls suggest that Lula has a lead over the current president. If neither candidate receives more than 50% of the vote on 2 October, a second round will be held on 30 October. The new Brazilian president will be inaugurated on 1 Januray 2023.

VBSO comes Recommended for its capital markets and corporate departments. Back in 2019 , the firm added firepower to its disputes offering by hiring a partner from Highly Recommended KLA Advogados.
